Some lives refuse to fit neatly into one box. MãriJo Monteiro is one of them — and that has always been her greatest gift.
Born in São Bento, Lisbon, Portugal to Cape Verdean parents and raised in Providence, Rhode Island from the age of five, MãriJo grew up at the intersection of worlds. Cape Verdean culture ran deep in her home — her father, João Cirilo, a respected Cape Verdean singer-songwriter, and her mother, Maria R. Da Silva, a highly regarded pillar of the Cape Verdean community, shaped her earliest understanding of music, identity, and what it means to carry your culture with you wherever you go. She began recording at a young age alongside her father and other international artists — not as a hobby, but as a calling.
That calling was impossible to ignore. Recognized early for her musical and theatrical gifts, MãriJo earned scholarships to some of the most prestigious institutions in the country — the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and Rhode Island College's Drama Program. She further deepened her artistry in musical theater at Howard University in Washington, DC, before returning to Providence as a featured artist at the renowned Black Rep Theater. Music, performance, and storytelling were not separate pursuits — they were all expressions of the same voice.
New York City called next. She performed and toured with international artists, expanding her reach and honing her craft on some of the world's most demanding stages. It was in New York that another dimension of her presence was recognized — her poise, confidence, and commanding beauty earned her the title of Mrs. Full Figured and Fabulous at Full Figured Fashion Week, opening doors into the world of modeling. MãriJo has never been just one thing — and New York confirmed it.
Then came the most sovereign decision of her life. At the height of a rising career, MãriJo chose to pause — not out of defeat, but out of love. She stepped back from the spotlight to raise her son, Demetrius Jean Baptiste. It was a decision that required the kind of courage that doesn't make headlines but changes lives. Today, Demetrius holds a degree in mechanical engineering and thrives as a successful application engineer. That is not a footnote in MãriJo's story — it is one of its greatest chapters.
Through it all, she released her EP Jungle of Life — a powerful exploration of womanhood, motherhood, and the immigrant experience. Songs rooted in identity, culture, and the richness of life. Music that could only have been made by someone who had truly lived.
Now, MãriJo Monteiro is stepping fully and unapologetically into her purpose. A promise made, a calling answered. She returns not as someone starting over, but as someone arriving — armed with decades of lived experience, hard-won wisdom, and a creative vision that spans music, writing, travel, food, and culture.
